The pre-transplant evaluation covers both the HSC (hematopoietic stem cell) donor and the recipient.
The essential element of the pre-transplant evaluation is the establishment of compatibility between the two subjects through blood tests (serological or molecular biology).
When compatibility has been established, both for the donor and for the patient, a full clinical examination is carried out, blood tests and different samples for the assessment of vital functions (kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, coagulation), tests for the detection of possible infections, including dental examination and resolution of outbreaks of infection. The patient (the bone marrow recipient or recipient) is also given tests to determine the underlying disease state.
