The donation procedure takes place at the County Transfusion Centers. For the collection of some of the blood products, it is necessary for the donor to be pre-tested, before being able to donate. The pediatric oncologist and specialist at the transfusion center can provide you with the necessary details when appropriate.
Information the potential blood donor needs to know
The general conditions that a blood donor must meet are the following:
- age between 18-60 years;
- weight: over 58 kg for women and over 60 kg for men;
- not to have had diseases such as: hepatitis (of any type); TB; syphilis; malaria; epilepsy; brucellosis; ulcer; Diabetes; heart diseases; skin diseases; myopia over (-)6 diopters.
- systolic blood pressure between 11 and 18mmH;
- not to have undergone surgery in the last months;
- women should not be: pregnant, during the lousy period, during the menstrual period;
- not to have consumed fats or alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours before donation.
Before donating:
- In the morning before harvesting, products containing proteins, fats (milk, butter, meat, etc.) should not be consumed; you can have a tea, a coffee, a small substantial breakfast consisting of vegetables, fruits, etc.
- For smokers, do not smoke one hour before and after donation.
How much is donated:
- At a donation, 450 ml of blood is collected, a quantity that is restored: in volume in a few hours, cellular in 2 weeks.
Safety of the procedure for the health of the donor:
- The kit used for each donation is sterile and single-use.
- There is no risk of contamination with HIV or other viruses.
- Feeling faint or tired after donation is very rare.
- You can only donate if your health allows and you feel well.
- Before donating, you will be asked a few questions about your health and you will have a small medical examination – hemoglobin, pulse, blood pressure.
- Test results are confidential.
